For hair transplant surgeries in Singapore, up to 6,000 hair grafts can be transplanted in total depending on the patient’s needs. The
doctor will first remove grafts (follicular units that also contain sebaceous glands, nerves and muscle) from healthy scalp at the back of the head (known as the donor area).
After assessing, Dr Janna will tell you where the hair will come from (donor site) and where the hair will be placed (recipient site). On the day of the operation, the donor site is trimmed and grafts are individually removed. Where possible, Dr Janna will make sure that the donor site is concealed by remaining hair.
There are a few techniques for hair transplantation. Dr Janna has performed both Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (or strip technique) and routinely does more FUE now.
Donor grafts (or "strands") are examined and relocated to thinning or bald spots on the head. Hair grafts can be extracted as slit (4 to 10 hairs per graft) or micrografts (1 to 2 hairs per graft) and these grafts will be carefully placed into tiny holes. The whole process takes a few hours (depending on how much hair we are transplanting and can be done under both local anaesthesia or sedation.
